Mrs. Smothers' First Grade Class

In our classroom, I use simple poems to teach reading, writing, to go with a project, or a new theme. We keep a Poetry Journal and we add our favorite poems to it every week. As a class, we do different activities with the poems; read them together, illustrate our pages before we add them to our journal, look for spelling words and word families, and read them during quiet Reading time (or any free time). We are learning that poetry is fun- and it doesn't always have to rhyme!! These poems are not mine but taken from everywhere and I have given credit when I could.

Poems

Keep a Poem in Your Pocket
Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you'll never feel lonely
At night when you're in bed.
The little poem will sing to you
The little picture bring to you
A dozen dreams to dance to you
At night when you're in bed.
So-
Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you'll never feel lonely
At night when you're in bed.

Beginning of the Year

A Circle of Friends

We've joined together as classmates
as the new year begins...
A year full of learning
while we become friends.
We'll share and be kind
as we work and play.
And our friendship will grow
with each passing day.

I Did It

I tried
and tried
and tried
and tried
and then I quit
and cried.
I cried
and cried
and cried
and cried
and then I quit
and tried
and
I did it!

What Falls In The Fall?

In the fall
Do you fall out of bed?
Do you land on your head?
In the fall
Do houses fall down?
And buildings and butterflies
All over town?
Something must fall
In the fall if you please
Oh yes, the leaves fall.
They fall from the trees.

Pick A Pumpkin

Pick a pumpkin form the vine,
Pumpkin round, pumpkin fine.
Pick a pumpkin from the vine.

Pick a pumpkin from the vine.
You pick yours; I'll pick mine.
Pick a pumpkin from the vine.
Let's pick pumpkins!

turkey

November

Gobble Gobble

There's a turkey with
his tail spread wide.
He can see the farmer coming
so he's trying to hide.
He crosses the
barnyard running.
Talking turkey talk
gobble, gobble, gobble
wobble, wobble, wobble.

Little Pine Tree

In summertime my branches were
A place for birds to nest
In autumn my branches were
Their place for food and rest.
And now that wintertime is here
I hope ~ I hope to be
All glistening bright with snowflakes
~~The birds' Christmas Tree!

Snow Ball

I made myself a snowball
as perfect as could be
I thought I'd keep it as a pet
and let it sleep with me
I made it some pajamas
and a pillow for it's head
Then, last night it ran away
But first~~ it wet the bed.

Penguin Shuffle

Penguins shuffle shuffle to the
Left left left
Penguins shuffle shuffle shuffle to the
Right right right
Give a little wiggle
Give a little hop
Waddle round the iceberg
Never want to stop!

Kite Flying

On many spring days I wish that I
Could be a kite flying in the sky.
I would climb high toward the sun
And chase the clouds. Oh, what fun!
Whichever way the wind chanced to blow
Is the way that I would go.
I'd fly up, up, up. I'd fly down, down, down.
Then I'd spin round and round and round.
Finally I'd float softly to the ground.

Springtime

A small green frog
On a big brown log;
A black and yellow bee
In a little green tree;
A red and yellow snake
By a blue-green lake,
All sat and listened
To red bird sing,
"Wake up, everybody,
It's spring! It's spring!"

Good-Bye

Good-bye, now, good-bye, now,
The clock says we're done.
We had fun singing,
Now good-bye everyone.
I love you a little.
I love you a lot.
My love for you could fill . . .
Fourteen pots,
Twelve tin cans,
Five tea cups,
And two dish pans!
