Math Projects ~ "Fast Freddy"

Northside has developed "Fast Freddy" to help with math problem solving. Fast Freddy is provides a progressive strategies to solve word problems. The students start in kindergarten using the basics strategies They learn new strategies that advance with them into the upper grades. Each grade builds upon the previous years strategies.

In our class, we use "Fast Freddy" 3 - 4 times a week.

Tap & Tally

numbers

We use the Touch Dot Tap and Tally System to teach the students to add and subtract. To subtract with the Tap & Tally you count back using the dots. Example: 9 – 5 = 4 Count back using number 5. I say “9 come out of my mouth – 8,7,6,5,4 counting back the dots on the number 5. My answer is 4.
. To count on, start with the higher of the two numbers- 7 + 2. Say the 7 and count on 8,9 while touching on the 2 points on the number 2. Please check your orientation packet for more information.

Math Routines

Math Journals

Every morning as soon as we come in the door we start our math journal. Our math journal consist of a review of math skills that we are working on in class. The students work out four problems each day. When all the students are finished, we work them out all together.

Skipping Counting Dances

Part of our math curriculum is to be able to skip count by 2's, 5', & 10's.  This skill lays the foundation for multiplication.  In our class, we learn to skip count using music and dancing.  The children love it.  Ask them to sing them at home for you!

Math  Wall
Everyday we "do the math wall".  Our math wall allows us to practice skills we will use throughout the year.  For example: we add a straw everyday to count the numbers of days we have been in school.  As we get to 10 we make a bundle of ten.  This builds the ground work for place value.
