September
We began our apple unit
with an apple tasting. We tasted 3 familiar apples:
Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith. We had 1 mystery
apple:
a Grapple. A Grapple is an apple that taste like a grape.
They were yummy. |

After we tasted
the different apples, we graphed our favorite apple.
The Grapple won!

To close our
apple unit, we made apple tarts. The children use the
apple peeler
to peel and slice
the apples. Then the students chopped the apple slices
into pieces and put them in the tart pie shell. Next,
the
tarts went into the oven to bake. Add a dollop of whipped
cream and they are ready. Yummy!

February
Groundhog's
Day
Groundhog,
groundhog, what do you say?
Is winter almost over and is spring on the way?
Groundhog's Day was Wednesday, February 2nd. We started off the
day by reading "Groundhog Day" by Betsy Lewin. Next,
we made our own little groundhogs to take outside. We wanted
to know if we will have six more weeks of winter here in San
Antonio. Before
we went outside we checked on the Internet to see what Phil had
predicted. On Gobbler's Knob, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, at
7:00 a.m., February 2, 2005, Punxsutawney
Phil saw his shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of winter
weather! However, in San Antonio our Groundhogs did not see their
shadow! Spring is on the way! |

Bread
Dolls
All
year we have been learning about traditions
of families. At Easter time, in the Italian
culture they make bread dolls. One of our fifth
grade teachers shared with us how she used
to make bread dolls with her family when she
was a child. We read the story "Watch
Out for the Chicken Feet in Your Soup" by
Tomi De Poalo and then made our own bread dolls.

April
Field
Trip
Our
class went on a field trip to Natural Bridge Caverns.
Thanks to all the parents who came along to chaperone.
The kids were amazed at the caverns. Then they
enjoyed "panning" for minerals and gems.
It was a big hit! As an extra bonus we found milkweed
growing along the paths. We found 2 Monarch caterpillars
that we brought back to the classroom to raise. |

May Fear
Factor
We played
Fear Factor in our room. The excitement was at an all time
high in our class. As part of our desert unit, we tried
3 different types of cactus jelly on crackers. We tried
the jellies 1 round at a time. After the third jelly,
we had a final round of trying cooked cactus. We had a
blast! |
