What are Word Wall Words?

Our spelling words will combine word wall words and word patterns to make a list of
10 words per week. Word wall words are a list of words that First Graders frequently
use when writing. They are displayed on a wall in the room. For the most part these
words can not be "sounded out". Word wall words often don't fit into "easy" spelling
patterns. The students just need to know how to spell these words. Knowing how to spell
these words will allow the student to be more successful in writing. These words are introduced
at the rate of 5/6 per week.
The other 4/5 spelling words will be word pattern/families. They are rhyming words. A rhyme starts at the
vowel and continues to the end of the word. cake, bake, rake, etc. They have a predictable pattern to them.

All words are reviewed weekly. These words SHOULD NOT be misspelled in any writing
that they do. Your child will edit their writings to ensure word wall words are spelled
correctly. Once we have learned the words for that week they will be added to the word
wall and will be expected to be spelled correctly in their written work.

Spelling tests are on Fridays! if we are not in school on a Friday due to a holiday, Test will be on Thursdays.
