Ms. Van De Walle's 2nd Graders Visit the City Critter Module at Leon Valley Elementary

March 30, 2007

After attending our field trip to Friedrich Park, our class took a trip to the science lab. Here, we visited the City Critter Module. The kids were able to get up close to discover many aspects of a wildlife habitat.

These kids have no fear coming near a fox skin. They examined the skin to find out about body parts, covering, and camouflage.
It’s a good thing this little rascal is stuffed! We know that he can be really dangerous if we confront him in the wild. We also learned what a taxidermist does.
Have you ever looked at "scat" under a magnifying lens? This is as close as you would ever want to get to animal poop.

This was another exploration table that encouraged kids to use their senses in learning about wildlife. At the end of the table there are animal skulls. We could tell by their teeth if they were carnivores or herbivores.

There were also deer jaw bones, skin, and antlers.

This student checks out the inside of a bat house. Although it isn’t the Ritz Carlton, this house provides shelter for bats who are feeding in the area.
These rubber imprints allowed us to make tracks in the sand. Whose tracks are they? You had to really study the print closely to find out…OR just ask the friend that made them.
I’m NOT touching that! These students are finding that when saving bones, you need to put them in a chemical that will preserve them. YUCK!
